Garbage disposal installation.

Under-sink space is part of the plan. Send details of your garbage disposal so we can review the equipment and available room. Installing a reverse osmosis system? See the reverse osmosis page.

Start with the details

your installation.

A photo of the accessible cabinet interior can help. Do not disconnect plumbing or electrical equipment to take it.

  1. Disposal make and model
  2. Existing sink and cabinet arrangement
  3. Other equipment sharing the cabinet
  4. Replacement or first-time installation

A few common questions.

Does a garbage disposal come with a power cord?

It depends on the model; many ship without one, and manufacturers say not to reuse the old cord. Our team can add a cord to your estimate. A hardwired disposal or a missing outlet under the sink is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

My dishwasher drains through the disposal. What changes?

The new disposal's dishwasher inlet comes sealed with a knockout plug, which has to be removed or the dishwasher can back up. In California the dishwasher also needs an approved air gap.

Can I have a disposal with a septic system?

Usually. Manufacturers say their disposals work with properly sized, maintained septic systems, and some offer septic models that add a treatment to help break down waste.

What horsepower do I need?

Disposals run from about 1/3 to 1 horsepower. Smaller units handle everyday scraps; 3/4 and 1 horsepower models handle tougher scraps like fruit pits.

Will a disposal fit under my sink?

Measure the space first; some models stand over 12 inches tall. The drain connection also has to sit lower than the disposal's outlet so water doesn't stand inside. Send a photo of the cabinet with your request.

What should never go in a disposal?

Shells, glass, plastic, metal, grease, paint, solvents and chemical drain cleaners. Run cold water before, during and after grinding.
